How the schedule works, what to expect afterwards, and catching up if you are behind.

What it is
Immunisation teaches a child's immune system to recognise a serious infection before they ever meet it. South Africa's Expanded Programme on Immunisation sets out the schedule from birth through to school age, and the vaccines are recorded in the Road to Health booklet. Being behind is common and almost always fixable — there is no need to restart a series.
What to look for
Mild fever, fussiness or a sore, slightly swollen injection site are usual for a day or two
A small firm lump at the site can persist for a few weeks and is harmless
Sensible things to do at home
- Bring the Road to Health booklet to every visit
- Paracetamol by weight if your child is uncomfortable afterwards
- Extra feeds and cuddles; a cool cloth on the injection site helps
- Plan the next date before you leave the practice
When to see us
- Your child has missed doses and you would like a catch-up plan
- High fever lasting more than 48 hours after a vaccine
- Any difficulty breathing, swelling or widespread rash — seek help immediately
- Your child has an immune condition and you want the schedule reviewed
