What it is
Cholesterol is a fatty substance the body needs, carried in the blood by different particles. LDL is the one that contributes to fatty build-up in artery walls; HDL helps clear it. Cholesterol is never assessed alone — we read it alongside blood pressure, smoking, weight, family history and diabetes to estimate overall cardiovascular risk.
What to look for
No symptoms; it is found on a blood test
Very high inherited levels can occasionally show as fatty deposits around the eyes or tendons
Sensible things to do at home
- Swap saturated fats for plant oils, nuts and fish where you can
- Increase soluble fibre: oats, legumes, fruit and vegetables
- Stay active and maintain a weight that is realistic for you
- Stop smoking — this changes heart risk more than most single measures
When to see us
- You are over 40 and have never had a lipid test
- There is heart disease or stroke in your immediate family before age 60
- You already take a cholesterol medicine and have muscle aches or other side effects
