What it is
Stress, low mood and anxiety exist on a spectrum. Difficult weeks are part of life; a persistent change in sleep, appetite, concentration or enjoyment that lasts more than a couple of weeks is worth a conversation. A GP consultation is a normal, confidential place to start, and often the shortest route to the right support.
What to look for
Low mood or loss of interest in things you usually enjoy, most days for two weeks or more
Sleep that has changed markedly — too little, or too much
Constant worry, restlessness, a racing heart or tight chest
Difficulty concentrating, irritability, or withdrawing from people
Physical symptoms with no clear cause: headaches, stomach upset, fatigue
Sensible things to do at home
- Keep sleep and mealtimes regular, even on bad days
- Daily movement outdoors, however short
- Reduce alcohol — it worsens both sleep and mood
- Tell one person you trust; isolation makes everything heavier
