Post-operative rehabilitation
What rehab involves after surgery, and why the early weeks set the outcome.

What it is
Rehabilitation after surgery follows the protocol your surgeon sets, phase by phase: protecting the repair, restoring range of movement, then rebuilding strength and function. Progress is measured in weeks and months rather than days, and the home programme between sessions does most of the actual work.
What to look for
Some swelling and stiffness is expected for weeks after joint surgery
Concerning: increasing redness, heat, discharge, fever, or sudden calf pain and swelling
Sensible things to do at home
- Do the home exercises daily — frequency matters more than intensity
- Follow the weight-bearing and movement limits you were given exactly
- Elevate and use ice for swelling as advised
- Keep the wound clean and dry until cleared
When to see us
- Bring your surgeon's letter or protocol to the first session
- Progress has stalled, or movement is going backwards
- Any sign of wound infection, or calf pain and swelling — seek care urgently
